Sometime in the late spring of 1979 Malfunction Junction closed its doors to punk rock and started booking mainstream country/rock'n'roll/cover bands. An article from the June 13, 1979 issue of the Metropolitan substantiates this by stating simply "the Malfunction Juction has gone country rock..." It's unclear whether this shift was because they were tired of the audiences, weren't making enough money or some other reason. After April '79, gigs apparently began happening at the Ground Round. Why is this relevent to Smacky Jack? It all fits perfectly with trying to figure out who they were. A local with a vague recollection described them as a "Lynyrd Skynard-type band" and, seeing as this gig is after they stopped booking punk shows, his recollection makes complete sense. So there....
